PIBBA Conference

Today we met at the Latte Stone Park in Hagatna for the PIBBA (Pacific Islands Bilingual Bi-cultural Association) Conference. When we met, it was already about 1:30-2:00pm. At the Latte Stone Park is where they held the I Pa’ok, A CHamoru Cultural Experience, which was definitely a great thing to see. The Chamoru Culture Experience was mostly spoken in the language, Chamoru, so I did not understand what they were saying. However, Dr. Rivera mentioned that they were speaking to their ancestors. When hearing them speak, I felt that it was so passionate and respectful. Also, I do not really know what it is called, but I felt that one person was blessing each person who had Chamoru blood in them. They were given a card to write down a name that they'd like, or a name of something they like to do or what they enjoy doing. It was great experience overall.

Also, we discussed why fluency is important and what the connection and relation between visual and non-visual information with reading.

  1. Nice pictures Joyce! I was not able to join the group at Latte Stone Park, but I made up the hours by working earlier today at Okkodu High School; I'll reflect on my experience in one of my blogs. I didn't take any pictures, but the experience was definitely worth the time invested.

  2. The session at Latte Stone park was amazing. I really appreciated the blessing or acknowledgement of the ancient spirits...it was such a nice gesture. It was unfortunate that not everyone could participate.

  3. Joyce,

Thanks for the PIBBA pictures! The Pa'ok Ceremony you attended was undoubtedly a meaningful cultural experience. Appreciation of other cultures certainly enhances one's learning experience.

    Best regards,
    Dr. Rivera
